CBSE board exam 2027: Class 10 and 12, and the classes before

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) holds the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams from mid-February, with Class 10 students now getting two sittings a year. The 2027 papers are built on the NCERT textbooks and the board’s sample papers, with around half the questions competency-based. What the paper looks like

CBSE Class 10 papers typically carry 80 marks of theory and 20 marks of internal assessment per subject, in 3 hours. The paper is divided into sections: multiple-choice questions of one mark, very short, short and long answers of 2, 3 and 5 marks, and case or source-based questions of 4 marks. Mathematics is offered as Standard and Basic papers.

In Class 12, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are 70 marks of theory plus 30 practical; Mathematics, English Core, Accountancy, Economics and Business Studies are 80 theory plus 20 internal. Around half of the questions in every subject are competency-based: assertion-reason, case studies and questions that apply a concept to a new situation rather than recall it.

From 2026, Class 10 students sit the first board exam in February and may sit a second exam in May to improve; the better score counts. Sample papers and marking schemes for every subject are published on cbse.gov.in each year and are the reliable guide to the current pattern.
