The UP Board Class 10 Social Science important chapters are spread across four NCERT books, which is why many students feel the subject is too long to finish. It is not, once you see the pattern. The UPMSP High School Social Science paper typically carries 70 marks of theory with an OMR objective part and descriptive questions, plus 30 marks of project work, and it covers History, Geography, Civics and Economics in fixed proportions with a map question. This guide lists the chapters that are typically asked, explains how to write 4 and 6-mark answers, and gives a dates and terms list to start your revision sheets.
UP Board 10th Social Science paper pattern: four parts, OMR and map work
UP Board (UPMSP) High School Social Science typically carries 70 marks for the written paper and 30 marks for project work and internal assessment done through the school. The written paper is 3 hours 15 minutes including 15 minutes of reading time. In recent years it has had an objective Part A of multiple-choice questions on OMR, typically 20 questions of 1 mark each, and a descriptive Part B with very short, short and long answer questions. Confirm the exact layout from the latest model paper on upmsp.edu.in.
The paper is divided by subject. In recent model papers History and Civics have been grouped as one half (roughly 35 marks) and Geography and Economics as the other half (roughly 35 marks), each with its own objective and descriptive questions. Two map questions typically appear, one on the History map (places connected to the national movement) and one on the Geography map (soils, crops, minerals, power plants, ports, airports). The maps are usually printed with the paper; you mark and label on them and tie them inside the answer book.
The syllabus is the four NCERT Class 10 books: India and the Contemporary World II (History), Contemporary India II (Geography), Democratic Politics II (Civics) and Understanding Economic Development (Economics). Some NCERT chapters have been placed in project or reading-only lists in recent syllabi, so check the current UP Board syllabus on upmsp.edu.in before you plan.
UP Board Class 10 Social Science important chapters, book by book
Questions in recent years have come from every prescribed chapter, so the list below is about depth and order, not about leaving chapters out. The chapters named first in each book are those that have typically contributed the most descriptive questions in recent model papers.
- History (India and the Contemporary World II): Nationalism in India is typically the single most asked chapter; then The Rise of Nationalism in Europe, The Making of a Global World, The Age of Industrialisation and Print Culture and the Modern World.
- Geography (Contemporary India II): Resources and Development, Agriculture, Minerals and Energy Resources and Manufacturing Industries carry most descriptive questions; Water Resources, Forest and Wildlife Resources and Lifelines of National Economy are regular in the objective part and the map.
- Civics (Democratic Politics II): Power-sharing, Federalism, Political Parties and Outcomes of Democracy; Gender, Religion and Caste typically appears as short questions.
- Economics (Understanding Economic Development): Development, Sectors of the Indian Economy, Money and Credit and Globalisation and the Indian Economy; Consumer Rights is often a project topic, so check the current syllabus.
How to write 4-mark and 6-mark answers in UP Board Social Science
Social Science answers are marked by points. A 4-mark answer typically needs four distinct points, each one or two lines, written as a numbered list or short paragraphs with a one-line introduction. A 6-mark answer needs six to eight points, grouped under two or three small headings, with a one-line introduction and a one-line conclusion. Length is not the goal; the examiner looks for the number of correct, relevant points.
Use the question words. Describe or explain means points with a reason each. Compare means a two-column table or paired sentences. Causes, effects, features, merits and demerits are all lists. In History, include the year or decade with every event you name. In Geography, name one example (a state, a river, a mine, an industry) for every type you list. In Civics, quote the article or the term (coalition, federalism, secularism) correctly. In Economics, give the definition first and then an example from the Indian economy.
Underline key terms and dates, leave a line between points, and write the question number exactly as printed. For very short answers of 1 or 2 marks, one clear sentence is enough. Written-answer practice with step marking in Myrix Learn shows which points an examiner would count, which is useful when you cannot tell whether a 6-mark answer is complete.
UP Board Class 10 Social Science map work
Map work is worth easy marks because the list of items is short and repeats. For History, the NCERT map items for Nationalism in India include the places connected with the Indian National Congress sessions (Calcutta, Nagpur, Madras), the centres of the non-cooperation and civil disobedience movements (Champaran, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Chauri Chaura, Bardoli, Dandi), and Jallianwala Bagh. For Geography, the items are typically soils, major crops, dams, iron ore and coal mines, power plants, software technology parks, ports and airports as listed in the NCERT map work syllabus.
Practise on blank outline maps of India at least once a week. Mark with a pencil first, then with a pen, and write the name next to the symbol in clear letters. Learn the position of each item by its state rather than by its exact dot, because a point in the correct state usually earns the mark. Keep a one-page list of all map items for both books and tick each one as you can place it without looking.

Both the objective part and the descriptive part reward exact dates, terms and names. Start a revision sheet with the items below and add to it chapter by chapter. Write each sheet in your own hand; the act of writing is what makes the dates stick.

Project work and daily practice for Social Science
The 30 marks of project work and internal assessment are decided by the school, typically through a project file on a topic from the syllabus (for example a local resource survey, a consumer awareness study or a study of a national movement event), a viva and periodic tests. Pick a topic early, follow the format your teacher gives, keep the file neat with headings, maps and sources, and submit on time. Those marks are decided well before the written paper.
For the written paper, download the official model paper and previous years from upmsp.edu.in and attempt them under exam timing, then compare your points with the NCERT text. Myrix Learn offers chapter-wise practice tests on the UP Board pattern in Hindi and English and a short Daily Board Dose, for ₹99 the first month and then ₹297/month; students who complete 10 study days in a month get 25% of the fee for that month back as a study reward (50% after 15 study days).
